When the Apostle Paul wrote Ephesians, it was soon after he had written the Epistle to the Colossians. That letter was written to address issues that were confronting the church in Colossae. But the letter to the Ephesians was a general letter that was sent to the region in and around Ephesus. The style is called circular because it was meant to be circulated among the brethren wherever they would be found.
As Paul is writing, he uses the first three chapters to go over doctrine with his readers. Those chapters are some of my favorites of Paul’s letters. They are rich with the teaching focused on the resurrection of Jesus and its impact on us as believers. In chapter four, Paul shifts gears to discuss how we are to live as believers.
